DISCOVER THE 6 ESSENTIAL STEPS TO DESIGNING YOUR FUTURE!

HOW CAN YOU DESIGN YOUR FUTURE?

It can seem like a daunting task, but with just 6 essential steps - YOU CAN DO IT!

Many Entrepreneurs and would-be Entrepreneurs would LIKE to design their future, but they just don't know where to begin.  How do you start the process of really "designing your future?"  Fear not!  By implementing the following 6 steps, you will be well on your way to doing just that!

STEP 1:  KNOW WHAT YOU WANT!

As obvious as that may seem, most people really DON’T know exactly what they want in life.  They go to work and come home every day, and never allow themselves the luxury of contemplating what they REALLY want in life.  Others may have a fuzzy idea of what they want, but not a crystal clear vision of exactly what they want!

Think about this;  if a builder has a vision of a hospital or a school they would like to build, they know exactly what they want!  They know how many windows, how many doors, which flooring is going where, etc. You’re trying to build something too, aren’t you?  A career, a business, your health, a relationship – why would it be any different for you?  Guess what ... it’s NOT!  It’s the same!  So first – you need to make sure you have a crystal clear vision of exactly what you want!

STEP 2: CREATE A BLUEPRINT

Going back to the builder, you and I both know that it doesn’t matter how crystal clear that builder’s vision is, until it is laid out on paper as a blueprint, nothing is going to happen!  Right? That building is not going up!  It will remain as just a picture in his/her mind!

Well when it comes to goals, it has been said that, “Until you commit your goals to paper, you merely have intentions that are like seeds without soil.” We all know that seeds need soil to grow.  Well, paper is to goals what soil is to seed, and if you plant the seeds of thought from your mind onto paper, then it can come to fruition!

Sales professionals often have fiscal projections for the end of the month or the year, but no other goals; no health goals, family goals, relationship, personal development, or anything else.  Designing your future encompasses far more than just bottom line projections!  It involves every area of your life.  So make sure you draw up the blueprint for your whole life.

STEP 3: KEEP IT IN FRONT OF YOU

I worked across the hallway from an Architecture company some years back, and where do you suppose the blueprints were to the buildings they were working on?  They were EVERYWHERE!  Laid out on tables all over the office; and that’s where they stayed every day while they were working on their project.  They didn’t roll up a blueprint and park it on a shelf until the project was complete!

So it’s important that you keep your blueprint in front of you too!  There are many ways to do that. One way is to read your goals two or three times a day.  Some make it their habit to read over their goals first thing in the morning when they get up and then last thing at night before they go to bed. Doing this keeps their goals "top of mind" all day long, day after day, week after week and yes, month after month.  The secret to the success of this strategy is to be consistent!  Sporadic checking on your goals is not nearly as effective as being committed to keeping your goals in front of you every single day.  How often did the builders keep their blueprints in front of them?  Not some days, not occasionally, but every day!   I call this a 'clue'!

Another way of keeping your goals in front of you is to print up or cut out pictures of what you want and tape or glue them on a poster board, or pin them onto a canvas or cork board; then place your board in a location where you will see it every day without fail.  If you are at your desk all day and can place it in front of you there - all the better.  If you are at home, then put it where you will see it most often.  If you are on the road, you can make what we call a "Vision Book" where you place the same pictures and phrases in a spiral bound notebook that you can take with you wherever you go and flip through it periodically throughout the day.  Make sure some of your Affirmations are included here.

STEP 4:  FIND SUPPORT THROUGH ASSOCIATIONS

No one is an island.  Even the so-called "self-made millionaires" did NOT get where he/she is without assistance from others around them.  Most people lack the self-confidence needed to pursue their dream.  And because they hang around other unsuccessful people, there is no support system there to bolster their self-belief.  Many people are discouraging to their friends and relatives because they don't  believe it's possible for that person to do something extraordinary either. In fact, if you do begin to have some success, it can create a lot of negative comments from people who are suppose to be your friends.  Subconsciously, some friends do not want you to become successful, because that would make them feel inadequate.  They want you to stay right down there with them - "Don't go movin' up on me now!"

People in general don't like change, and when you are taking actions that will result in a change, your current friends or family members may not be for it at all!  It can be very discouraging.  It has been said that you become like the 5 people  you hang around most.  Take a look around you.  How are they stacking up with what you really want? Are they aligned with where you want to be, or will they keep you in "status quo" mode? It's important to pay attention!

If you discover that your friends are actually going to hinder your progress, what do you do?   Who can you associate with that will spur you onto greater things?  You may be thinking, really successful people won't want to hang around with me!  But there is another kind of  'association' with them that is just as effective as having dinner together, and that is reading their books, following their blogs, watching their instructional or motivational videos, joining their programs, attending their seminars, etc.  Rubbing shoulders with people like this can have a profound and positive effect on you; on how you start to feel about yourself, and on how much knowledge you will gain; all of which will greatly impact what you begin to do and accomplish.

STEP 5:  TAKE ACTION! PULL THE TRIGGER!

The last 6 letters in the word satisfaction is ACTION! This is where the rubber meets the road!  It's one thing to learn stuff, it's quite another to implement!  It's easy to get caught up in thinking that you're doing things you have learned about, just because you've learned about them and because you are thinking about doing them all the time.  But 'thinking about doing something' is NOT the same as doing it!  That might sound pretty elementary, but notice how many valuable things you have learned over the years, perhaps effective strategies you have read or heard about.  How many of them have  you actually put into practice, and how many are still on the back burner or have not even come to mind in a long time now?  There may be things that you are still going to do!  'Going to' doesn't cut it!  G.S.D.F. is an acronym for Get Stuff  Done Fast that I heard at a James Malinchak seminar.  It's a good motto!

Don't let these 6 steps be something else you learned about or were reminded of again!  IMPLEMENT!  Start the process of 'Designing Your Future!"  It all starts with #1!  What do YOU want?

Step 6:  YOUR MINDSET IS KEY

Of all the steps we've discussed to this point, #6 is the most important of all the steps!  In fact, if you don't have the right mindset, it doesn't matter how hard you work or what you do, you will never achieve your full potential.  What do I mean by Mindset anyway?  And what is the difference between the 'right' mindset and the 'wrong' mindset?

You have to BELIEVE that you can have what you want; that you should have what you want; that you deserve to have what you want; that there is a reason you want what you do!  You must realize and believe that, if you were not meant to have whatever it is you want, you would not have that desire in the first place!  Your mindset must allow you to feel worthy of acquiring, enjoying, pursuing and achieving your dream.

This is, for most of us, much easier said than done, given the negative messages we all have received growing up - "What's wrong with you?" "Why can't you be like your brother?"  "Stop being so stupid!"  "Stop asking so many questions!"  "Why don't you get better grades?"  "Your room is a pig sty!"  "What's the matter with  you?"  etc. etc. and on it goes......

If deep down, you don't believe you should have what you want, or if it seems too far fetched and outlandish, then, it really doesn't matter how hard you work ... you're not getting to your dream!  But how can you 'change your mind' and develop the right attitude for success?   Make a conscious effort to continually, repititiously tell yourself that you ARE worthy and you DO have what it takes and you absolutely SHOULD have your dream.  You can do this by continually saying these things to yourself daily.  AFFIRMATIONS are also an amazing and powerful tool to 'Change Your Mind and Change Your Life!'
